Westview student named as Merit Scholarship winner

Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation released the names of the first group of winners in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Marianela D’Aprile, a Westview High School student, has been awarded the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Comany scholarship. D’Aprile has architecture listed as a probable career field.
Aproximately 1,000 distinguished high school seniors have won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarships financed by about 200 companies, foundations and other business organizations.
Scholars were selected from students who advanced to the Finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and meet criteria of their scholarship sponsors.
Corporate sponsors provide National Merit Scholarships for finalists who are children of their employees, residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the grantor wishes to encourage.
More than 1.5 million juniors in over 22,000 high schools entered the 2010 National Merit Scholarship competition when they took the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.
To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, semifinalists had to fulfill requirements to advance to finalist standing.
By the conclusion of the 2010 competition, about 8,400 finalists will be selected to receive National Merit Scholarships totaling over $36 million.
Winners are judged to have the strongest combination of academic skills and achievements, extracurricular activities and potential for success.
