|MARTIN, Tenn. – For the second straight season, the Ohio Valley Conference tennis coaches have recognized multiple University of Tennessee at Martin tennis players as some of the most elite players in the league. It was announced last Thursday that senior Martie Wahl and freshman Anna Winkelmann have earned All-OVC first-team accolades. |
“I am proud that two of the six players named to the All-OVC first team were Skyhawks,” UT Martin head coach Dennis Taylor said. “Martie and Anna epitomize what Skyhawk tennis is all about. Both are top academic students majoring in engineering, extremely talented athletes, and both girls have a deep personal commitment to excellence in everything they do.”
A senior from Cape Town, South Africa, Wahl added to her immensely successful career in 2010. After being named the fourth best returning player in the OVC by the coaches in the preseason, she lived up to that claim by going 11-4 in singles play, competing in the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 slots for Taylor. In doubles action, she joined forces with fellow senior Belisa de Brito to go 9-6, with the majority of those decisions coming at No. 1. Heading into the OVC tourney, she has won six straight doubles matches and seven of her last eight singles matches. For as good as her entire body of work was, she was even better in OVC play – as she tallied 8-1 records in both singles and doubles matches in 2010. For her career, she went 38-31 in singles (27-13 conference record) and 39-28 in doubles competition (26-13 in OVC).
Winkelmann didn’t need much time to acclimate herself to the collegiate level of play, as she reeled off six straight singles victories to begin her career. After tasting defeat in singles play on March 27, she picked right back up where she left off – winning each of her last seven matches of the season to end the year with a 13-1 record and an 8-1 conference slate. In doubles, she competed with Anna Marie Herbold to go 10-3, including an 8-1 record in league play. The freshmen duo was a big reason for UT Martin’s team success in doubles play, as the Skyhawks won an amazing 82 percent (22-of-27) of their doubles matches in OVC action. Winkelmann and Herbold won eight of their last nine regular season doubles matches.
