|Westview softball splits first pair in Memorial |

In two tight and highly-competitive contests, the Westview Lady Chargers netted a win and a loss this past Friday at the Madison Fagan Memorial Scholarship Tournament in Martin.

In the first contest, the Lady Chargers took an early 1-0 lead against district-rival Dyer County, but faltered in the bottom of the third and dropped the contest 3-1. WHS also took a 3-0 win over Bolton.
Against Dyer County, was retired in order in the top of the first. With Shanna Chappell pitching for Westview, Kaetlyn Massie singled, but Bynum made a diving catch in foul territory for an out and both Brittany Cranford and Holly Gibbons grounded out to end the inning.
The Lady Chargers led off the second with a single. Katelyn Bowen was tagged out at first, but Westview took the lead, 1-0, on a McKenzie Norris single. In the bottom of the inning, Chappell kept the Lady Choctaws in check to keep a 1-0 lead for the home squad.
DC pitcher Paige French again kept Westview at bay to end the top of the third inning. French led off the bottom of the inning with a single. After Massie grounded out, two straight bunts advanced courtesy runner Rian Burch to third. Burch was thrown out at home, but the reprieve was only temporary as Gibbons belted a three-run inside-the-park home run to put Dyer County up 3-1.
In the top of the fourth, Bowen walked and Norris singled, but Chappell struck out and French forced two groundouts to end the top of the ining. Chappell struck out a batter and forced two groundouts to end the fourth with Westview trailing 3-1.
Mary Kirk Mesimer led off the fifth inning with a single. Courtesy runner Madison Henderson eventually made it to third but was thrown out at home, however, and Robb popped up for the third out. It was three up and three down for the Lady Choctaws and Dyer County held a 3-1 lead after five.
In the top of the sixth, Bynum led off with a single, but was stranded to end the contest with a 3-1 win for Dyer County.
In Westview’s night contest, the Lady Chargers fought a tough Bolton squad in a game that was scoreless through three, before finding a seam in the defense in the fourth and blanked the Lady Wildcats, 3-0.
The Lady Chargers went down in order in the top of the first inning. Robb took the mound for WHS and recorded three strikeouts, however, and the first inning ended in a scoreless tie.
In Westview’s half of the second, Jenna Hazlewood ripped one through the gap but was stranded.
Alexis Rabung led off the Bolton order with a line-drive single. Allissa Moffett singled and Rabung made it to third. Ashley Stephenson struck out and Emma Sutton doubled, but Rabung was thrown out at the plate and Lindsey Costello grounded out to end the inning.
It was three up and three down for both teams in the third, but Westview put a run on the board in the fourth when Harrison singled and both Robb and Bynum bunted to send in the run. Robb notched another strikeout to end the fourth with a 1-0 lead for the Lady Chargers.
Bowen led off with a fifth with a fly that fell in for a single. Norris completed a sac bunt to send Bowen to second and Mesimer sent one to right field to send in the run. Gaston bunted and Mesimer scored to put the home team up 3-0. Robb struck out Sutton, forced Costello to pop up for the second out and struck out Paige Copeland to end the inning.
With neither team putting up any offense in the sixth, the Lady Chargers walked away with a 3-0 victory.
