Matt Beaty spoiled the chance for a shutout, but the Henry County bats were too much from the beginning and the Patriots knocked out the Dresden Lions, 12-1, this past Thursday in Dresden.
With Josh Bone on the mound for the Lions, Henry County built a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Skylar Haley singled to start the third. The next two batters walked to load the bases and a third walk sent in a run to up the Patriots lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the inning, Jay McCadams forced Chaz Coleman to fly out and struck out Bone and Colin Kanehl to end the inning.
Kane Barrow opened the fourth with a line-drive single. Hunter Frey grounded out. Fate McAfee walked and the runners advanced on a wild pitch. Haley doubled to drive in two runs and the Henry County lead increased to 6-0.
Gatlin Hatchel led off the Dresden half of the fourth with a hit to center field, but Beaty grounded into a double play. Daniel Harris got on base with a single and stole second, Eric VanDyke walked and Jay Wainscott was hit with a pitch to load the bases, but Harris was thrown out making a run for home to end the inning.
Dresden contained the Patriots in the fifth, but grounded into another double play in the bottom of the inning to keep the score at 6-0.
McAfee led off the sixth with a walk and Haley’s hit cleared the fence to send in two runs and put the visitors ahead, 8-0. A solo shot from the next batter put the Patriots in front, 9-0.
Kanehl struck out and Hatchel grounded out, but Beaty blasted a shot over the right field fence and put Dresden on the board, 9-1, breaking up the shutout.
The Patriots scored three more runs in the seventh, however, held the Lions and returned to Paris with a 12-1 victory.
