DuPont business Pioneer Hi-Bred held an official groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for an expanded corn research facility in Union City. (See related photo, Page 2.)
The business opened its first research facility in Union City in 1955. The new facility will be close to 25,000 square feet and will serve as research headquarters for about 15 full-time employees.
Construction for the new facility is currently under way. It is expected to be completed by early fall. The facility will house yellow corn research efforts as well as a white corn breeding program.
To accommodate its rapidly growing business, Pioneer is expanding both its production and research locations in North America. The Union City Research Center is just one of many investments in its facilities to increase productivity to meet growing customer demand.
In recent months, Pioneer has announced plans for new research facilities and space for 400 new research positions based in Johnston, Iowa; the Center for Dryland Research in eastern North Carolina; a commercial and parent soybean seed production facility in New Madrid County, Mo.; expansion of drought research in Manhattan, Kan., and Plainview, Texas; a new research center in Ithaca, Mich.; and expansion at Hermiston, Ore. These expanding resources represent the commitment by Pioneer to provide better products for the specific needs of growers’ unique operations.
Increasing food production is a priority initiative for DuPont. The company invests about half of its $1.4 billion annual research and development budget to furthering this goal.
