SING OUT — Members of the revitalized Boys & Girls Club Choir were “headliners” for Friday afternoon’s annual Black History Month program at the club in Union City. The Rev. Alvin Summers of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Martin is the new choir director. He accompanied the group on piano, with Keith Anderson providing percussion. Members of the choir include (from left, facing camera) Tyler Yanders, who was a soloist; Kiara Roberson; Latavia Thomas; and (back to camera) Sequence Ware and Alivia Bishop. Union City councilman Dianne Eskew was the speaker for the afternoon. She encouraged the children and teens attending to find role models in their community and educate themselves so they can write their own success stories. Those attending were also entertained by the “Dedicated Divas of Step,” led by club teen director Chelsea Smith, and with a headwear fashion show directed by club volunteer and University of Tennessee at Martin student Stacy Mesfin, who explained the significance of the colors of the headpieces made and modeled by club members and staff. Aretha Lockridge helped club members make the hats.
