The Black Oak Lady Eagles sported an undefeated record. Then they took on the Martin Middle School Lady Panthers in the Area 5 championship game and watched their hopes of perfection quickly disappear on Thursday night.
Martin took a big lead early, held Black Oak to single-digit point totals in all four quarters and won easily, 54-21, to claim the crown.
In the first quarter, Tamara Nettles, Kaley Leyhue and Tiffany Rechis powered the Lady Panthers to a 10-2 start. The Lady Eagles went scoreless from the field, but managed to hit five of six from the free-throw line and Martin led 10-5 after one.
Rechis opened the second with a 3-point play, but Tristen Miller answered for Black Oak with the team’s first field goal from the floor. Darcey Jones knocked down a shot from long distance to slice the Lady Panther lead to three, 13-10, but Kaley Leyhue and Rechis led Martin on a 13-0 tear and at the half, the Lady Panthers held a 29-12 lead.
With six points in the third, Kendall Leyhue helped push the Martin advantage to 43-18 while holding the Lady Eagles to six points.
Dianna Flippen scored all three Black Oak points in the fourth and Martin never let up, putting up 11 and rolling to a 54-21 victory.
Kaley Leyhue led all scorers with 18 points. Rechis scored 11. Flippen put up seven for Black Oak.
