Thomas D. “Smitty” Smith, 65, of South Fulton died Feb. 6, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City.

Services were set for 2 p.m. today at Hornbeak Funeral Home in Fulton, with Miles Mayo officiating. Burial was to follow in Obion County Memorial Gardens.

The family requests that memorials be made to American Cancer Society, 3140 Parisa Drive, Paducah, KY 42003; or Families of Fallen Firefighters, P.O. Box 498, Emmitsburg, MD 21727.

He was born Nov. 19, 1944, in South Fulton, son of the late Douglas “Red” and Vera Lee (Serratt) Smith. He married the former Hazel Blanton Oct. 19, 1968. She survives. He was a member of Smith Street Church of Christ in South Fulton and had retired as the fire chief for the City of South Fulton in 2009, after 19 years of service. He had lived in this area all his life.

Survivors also include his son, Brian Smith of South Fulton; and his niece, Kim Becker of Pacific, Mo.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Wanda Tibbs.
