JACKSON (AP) — The Jackson City Council has given preliminary approval to a citywide curfew for juveniles. The council voted 6-2 with two absent on Tuesday night to advance the proposal, which would bar people under 18 from any public places from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights and midnight to 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights. The Jackson Sun reported the council added a requirement that police report quarterly on a curfew’s effectiveness in reducing juvenile crime. The council also eliminated an escalating fine on parents of offenders. Second and final reading is scheduled for next month. If approved, the curfew would take effect July 1 in the city of nearly 60,000 people. ——— Information from: The Jackson Sun, http://www.jacksonsun.com Published in The Messenger 2.3.10
