By SABRINA BATES Special to The Messenger After rejecting the first tentative agreement two weeks ago, USW Local 878 and Goodyear-Union City officials went back to the bargaining table and composed a new contract that was accepted by union members last week. According to USW Local 878 recording secretary Johnny Dyer, the local contract was approved by the voting union membership at the Goodyear-Union City plant. The first rejected agreement between the two bargaining entities would have outsourced 21 jobs at the Union City plant, including janitorial, housekeeping and the yard gang. Under the proposal, 10 associates holding those jobs would have been offered a buyout at $3,000 per year of service to the plant with no cap. The remainder of the associates holding the jobs set to be outsourced would have been placed into different positions within the plant. The most recent agreement reached between the USW Local 878 members and Goodyear associates eliminated the outsourcing of the 21 jobs. Other changes to the local contract included a previous mandate for Goodyear associates to be paid through direct deposit. The company proposed an ATM be placed in the local plant. The ratified agreement eliminates the use of direct deposit for associates. The bidding and shift preference proposal of the original contract was kept in place under the ratified local agreement. Under the terms of the contract, bidding and shift preference would only be granted once every 12 months, as opposed to the current time of six months. The local contract was ratified on Friday by the USW Local 878 membership. Editor’s note: Sabrina Bates is editor of The Weakley County Press. Published in The Messenger 2.3.10
