The Dresden Lions had a cold trip to McKenzie, but with hot shooting were able to put away both Rebel squads early to take two key District 13-A victories this past Tuesday night.
The Lady Lions didn’t allow the host Lady Rebels any more than five points in any quarter and won easily, 41-17, while the Dresden boys built the majority of their lead in the second quarter in taking a 59-43 victory.
Amy Reddick hit the first three of the game for DHS and Alex Glisson scored the next 11 points for Dresden to give the visitors a 14-4 lead at the end of one quarter of play.
Glisson opened the second quarter with a three and she and Courtney McMillin combined for three more shots from long distance. At the half, the Dresden lead had grown to 30-9.
The Lady Lion offense hit a speed bump in the third, but the Lady Rebel scoring never picked up. Both teams scored just three points each and Dresden took a 33-12 lead into the fourth.
Glisson knocked down her fourth three of the night and Dresden out-scored McKenzie 8-5 for the quarter to roll to a 41-17 win.
Glisson led all scorers with 20 points. Alexandra Gray’s 10 led McKenzie.
In the second contest, Dresden used a high-scoring second quarter to build a big lead and held on through a comeback attempt in the second half to make it a sweep for the night, 59-43.
Two threes from Dillon Matlock and a shot in the paint from Daniel Harris gave Dresden an 8-0 lead to start the contest. McKenzie got 3-pointers from Max Arnold and Richie Clark cut the lead to four, 10-6, and free throws from Alex Pierce split the Dresden lead in two, but Tyler McPeak led a late Lion charge and the visitors held a 16-10 advantage at the end of one quarter.
The Lions scored the first nine points of the second quarter led by five points from Gatlin Hatchel. A three from Arnold put McKenzie on the board again after a long drought. Tyler Hawks and Matt Beaty scored four points each in the paint to aid the Lions in doubling the Rebs, 34-17, at the half.
Arnold continued to lead the Rebels in the third and cut the deficit to a dozen at 39-27 by hitting a pair from beyond the arc. McPeak turned the tide, however, with six points including a dunk that took the wind out of the sails for McKenzie. Though out-scored 14-11 in the third, the Lions led 45-31 after three.
Dresden pushed its lead to 20 in the fourth and, though Arnold cut it back to 15 single-handedly with a jumper and a three, the Lions were too much for the Rebels to handle and they prevailed 59-43.
McPeak led Dresden with 12 points. Hatchel scored 11 and both Harris and Matlock put up 10 each. Arnold had 21 for McKenzie.
