WEATHERLY
MARTIN, Tenn. – Alecia Weatherly, junior forward for The University of Tennessee at Martin’s women’s basketball team, has been named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Newcomer of the Week for a fifth time. Weatherly used a game-winning 3-pointer as part of a career-high 21-point night to help secure her fifth conference newcomer award.
Weatherly’s game-winning 3-pointer against Tennessee Tech not only secured her top scoring performance as a Skyhawk, but in the process it also snapped UT Martin’s OVC record 29-game conference losing streak. In the game Weatherly also pulled down three rebounds and dished out a pair of assists.
She followed her career-best scoring game with a nine-point, nine-rebound outing against Jacksonville State. Against the Gamecocks she also dished out another assist, while picking up three steals and a block.
By being named the OVC Newcomer of the Week for a fifth time, Weatherly is now in very rare company. Only Nichole Lockridge (1997-99) has been named the OVC Newcomer of the Week five or more times for UT Martin, capturing the honor a total of six times during her first year for the Skyhawks.
Weatherly will now look to continue her strong play this Thursday as she leads UT Martin on the road to Southeast Missouri for another conference showdown.
