The Dresden Lions hit their first nine free throws of the fourth quarter while holding the Bruceton Tigers scoreless for nearly five minutes to pull away for a 52-44 home win on Tuesday night in Dresden.
The Lady Lions made it a district sweep with an easy 60-30 win over the Bruceton girls.
The boys game was a close contest until the fourth quarter. Both teams held five-point leads in the first half, but after the mid way point of the second quarter, neither team led by more two points. The score was tied on eight occasions, including at the half (23-all) and at the end of the third quarter (33-all).
Both teams had chances to take the lead, but it was an offensive rebound by Jacob Vallee that gave Dresden another opportunity after a missed fastbreak layup. Soon after, Dillon Matlock drew a foul and hit both free throws to put DHS on top, 35-33.
Matlock doubled the lead with a baseline drive and a reverse layup over Tiger center Chandler Jordan that got the Lion faithful on their feet with six minutes left to play.
Tyler McPeak, Matt Beaty and Vallee all hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead while Bruceton repeatedly missed from the floor. Another Matlock free throw set the Dresden lead at 44-33 with 3:36 left.
Jordan broke the ice for Bruceton with a trey at the 3:13 mark, but the Lions kept the Tigers at bay for the 52-44 win.
Daniel Harris led DHS with 12 points, while Matlock added 11, and McPeak finished with 10. Jordan’s 28 points for Bruceton topped all scorers.
In the girls game, the Lady Lions were never challenged on the way to the 60-30 win.
Dresden’s Jesica Parsley scored eight of her 16 points in the first quarter to key the Lady Lions to a 20-4 lead after a frame.
Alex Glisson kept DHS rolling with 10 of her team-high 17 points in the second quarter to propel Dresden to a 47-19 halftime lead.
Bruceton was led by Brittany Farley’s 18 points.
