After three quarters of play, Wes Clark nearly had as many points as the entire South Fulton team and the visiting Red Devils never recovered from there.
Both Greenfield squads were able to put South Fulton away early to record a pair of wins this past Tuesday night in Greenfield. Behind Clark’s 35 points, the Yellowjackets picked up their first District 14-A win of the season, 84-52, while the Greenfield girls maintained their perch atop the district standings with a 57-37 victory.
Clark came out firing early and pushed Greenfield out to a 5-0 start. South Fulton picked up three points each from Montre Lewis and Jonathan Avent, but Clark’s 10 points helped the Yellowjackets to an 18-6 advantage after one quarter.
Avent stepped up for the visitors in the second. His 13 points kept the Red Devils within shouting distance, but Clark was far from finished. Putting up 14 points including three 3-pointers, he vaulted the home team to a 43-27 halftime lead.
Avent continued to make plays for the Red Devils, but with 3:21 left in the quarter, the Greenfield lead stretched to 20 points at 58-38. At the end of the third, South Fulton was locked on 38 and Clark had nearly tallied that many by himself with 35 points as the Yellowjackets led 62-38.
Avent hit two straight threes in the final quarter, but the Greenfield bench finished the job and the Yellowjackets took an 84-52 victory.
Along with Clark’s 35, Heath Crouse scored 13 and Jess Castleman put up 10. Avent led the Red Devils with 31.
In the earlier game, South Fulton held a lead until 2:20 remained in the opening quarter and from there the Lady Yellowjackets grabbed a one-point advantage and never looked back.
A shot inside from Emily Randolph put Greenfield up 9-8. Katie McCall knocked down a three, Jordan Galey hit a jumpshot and Haley Perkins added another three to give Greenfield a 17-10 lead after one frame.
Paxton Sisson opened the second with a long-distance shot to cut the GHS lead to four, 17-13, but the Lady Red Devils were held to just three more points for the entire frame. McCall keyed the Lady Yellowjackets with nine points, and Greenfield carried a 30-16 lead into halftime.
The Lady Jacket defense was dominant in the third quarter. Lady Devil Taleeah Cross scored all three of South Fulton’s points in the third quarter as the Lady Yellowjackets took a commanding 44-19 lead into the fourth.
Though Greenfield was out-scored 18-13 in the final quarter, the Lady Yellowjackets still won by 20 points at 57-37.
McCall led Greenfield with 21 points. Galey added 15 to the GHS point total. Cross scored 11 for South Fulton.
