The Westview Chargers out-manned the South Fulton Red Devils for a 78-56 win in their opening round game of the 45th Annual Martin Lions Club Christmas Tournament Monday night in Martin.
The Chargers needed nearly four minutes to shake off the rust from their vacation. Junior Dillon Gardner’s hustle helped to wake up Westview. Gardner’s baseline drive and layup knotted the score at 4-all.  He then drilled a 3-pointer and came up with a steal and layup to score seven consecutive WHS points to put the Chargers in front for the first time at 9-6. By the end of the quarter, the Charger edge reached double digits at 20-9.
SF’s Jonathan Avent kept his team in the game with nine second-quarter points. The Devils were within six at 23-17 after an Avent layup, part of his 21 points, with 5:48 left in the half.
The Chargers used their depth and persistence on the boards to key a 14-2 run to regain control. Westview had nine different players get court time in the second quarter. Westview got eight points from Jacob Lloyd and five more from Gardner in the frame to push their lead to 39-24 at the halftime break. Gardner and Lloyd both totaled 18 points.
With fresher legs, the Chargers continued to push the pace in the third quarter building the lead to 27 at 67-40 as Lloyd got a layup off an assist from Jonathan Jones for the last hoop of the frame.
In the final quarter, the Charger lead twice peaked at 28 points including the last time at 72-44 on a Javier Gordon layup with the assist going to RJ Scott. Charger freshman Nick Hart’s long 3-pointer from the top of the key closed out scoring in the 78-56 Westview win.
