The Dresden Lady Lions struggled against the quickness and fullcourt pressure applied by the Dyer County Lady Choctaws during their debuts in the 45th Annual Martin Lions Club Christmas Tournament Monday afternoon in Martin.
Dyer County’s sticky defense repeatedly forced turnovers, allowing the Lady Choctaws to steadily pull away from Dresden for a 61-38 victory.
With the win, Dyer County advanced to the semifinals to play Madison at 7 tonight (Tuesday). With the loss, Dresden was slated to play at 10 this morning (Tuesday). A win on Tuesday has Dresden on the court at 1 on Wednesday afternoon, while a loss sees the DHS girls in action at 10 on Wednesday morning.
The Lady Lions were unable to get good looks at the basket early due to their turnovers. Dyer County took advantage with fastbreak baskets to score the game’s first 10 points.
Dresden’s Jessica Jones finally broke the ice with a 3-pointer with 3:32 left in the first frame.
Jones added a layup after DHS broke the press to answer an 8-footer by Dyer County’s Allye Mallard for a 12-5 score.
Dresden cut the Lady Choctaw advantage to four points when Courtney McMillin drove into the paint and then dished a pass out to Alex Glisson. Glisson’s trey, part of her team-high 12 points, made the score 12-8 with 1:29 left in the first quarter.
Dyer County answered. Brit-tany Cranford drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to stretch the DC lead back to 10 points at 18-8 at the end of the quarter.
The consecutive treys ignited a 14-3 DC run that stretched the Dresden deficit to 21 points at 32-11 with 3:22 left in the half.
At the half, the Lady Lions trailed 34-18.
DC extended the lead to 50-30 by the end of the third quarter on the way to the 61-38 win.
