The Westview Lady Chargers overwhelmed the South Fulton Lady Red Devils, 63-39, in their opening round game of the 45th Annual Martin Lions Club Christmas Tournament Monday night in Martin.
Westview head coach Sean Stephenson substituted early and often against an SF team that only dressed out seven players.
The expanded rotation had the Westview girls a bit out of synch early. South Fulton took advantage and stayed close. Mid way through the first quarter, the Lady Chargers led by just a basket at 4-2 when Taleeah Cross cut the lead in half with a fastbreak layup at the 3:52 mark.
Lady Charger veteran Amber Rechis took over for the remainder of the quarter, scoring six of the next 11 WHS points.
Westview carried a 15-8 lead into the second quarter. The Lady Chargers began the frame with an 11-0 run to take control of the contest. Jacey Sims scored all seven of her points in the quarter to key WHS to a 33-14 halftime lead. Paxton Sisson’s 8 points topped SF at the half.
In the third quarter, Westview twice extended its lead to 30 points, the last time at 50-20 on Jasmine Howard’s layup with 1:13 left in the frame. By the end of the third, Westview was in front by 25 at 51-26.
Kayla Guthrie pitched in eight of Westview’s 12 points in the fourth as the Lady Chargers cruised to a 63-39 win.
Rechis was the lone Lady Charger scoring in double digits with 17 points. Paxton’s 10 points topped SF.
