Chimes requests donors to honor commitments Posted: Thursday, December 17, 2009 9:02 pm By: Chris Menees Messenger Staff Reporter By CHRIS MENEES Messenger Staff Reporter Just one week from today, Chimes for Charity will be making some very special deliveries to less fortunate families across Obion County. Chimes’ annual food basket delivery will begin early the morning of Dec. 24 with the help of volunteers from across the community. In the meantime, Chimes is still in need of donors to honor pledges made during last week’s annual fund raiser telethon and is in need of many volunteers for the delivery. The donations will help Chimes in its quest to meet this year’s $45,000 goal. As of last week, about $37,500 had been pledged. Monetary donations may be mailed to Chimes for Charity, P.O. Box 661, Union City, TN 38281. “We want to encourage people to honor their pledges and send in their donations,” Chimes secretary Lindsay Frilling said today. “And we need lots of volunteers (for the Christmas Eve food basket delivery),” she added, explaining that many routes have been added this year. Chimes for Charity — sponsored by the Union City Jaycees and J’Cettes — provides food, clothing and toys to less fortunate families throughout Obion County at Christmas. The 75-year-old program depends on contributions from the community in order to fund its various projects. Chimes will be in need of volunteers to help sort items and pack the food baskets to be delivered to those in need around Obion County next Thursday morning. The sorting will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Obion County Bus Garage in Troy’s industrial park and the packing will start at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the bus garage. Routes and delivery information for the Christmas Eve delivery will be provided at those activities. Applications for the food baskets were received by Chimes through mid-November and were pre-screened last month to determine the recipients based on the greatest need. Baskets will be delivered next week to both individuals and entire families who have needs, according to Chimes officials. Chimes received a considerable amount of its canned goods and toys for the baskets from the Santa’s Village held last weekend at the University of Tennessee at Martin’s ag pavilion.
