Republicans to be listed first on Tennessee ballots

NASHVILLE (AP) — State Election Coordinator Mark Goins says Tennessee Republicans will be listed first on all ballots, beginning with a special House election next month.
The Republican election coordinator tells The Knoxville News Sentinel that a 1975 law grants him the authority to decide statewide ballot rules.
Goins says he listened to recordings of the lawmaker debate and that the intent of that law was to give the “majority party” the top billing on ballots.
Goins was appointed to his job by Republican Secretary of State Tre Hargett, who was elected to that post by the new joint GOP majority in the House and Senate in January.
Goins says he doesn’t think the order of party listing will “make an iota of difference” in the outcome of the Oct. 13 special election to replace retired Democratic Rep. Curt Cobb of Shelbyville.
