No longer holding on to a lengthy losing skid, the Dresden Lions are now the official owners of a winning streak to start off the 2009 season.
Into the clear — Dresden’s Zach Jolley (right) has plenty of room to run, while teammate Isaac Butler (left) looks for a Peabody defender to block during the Dresden Lions’ 27-14 win over the host Peabody Golden Tide on Friday night in Trenton.
Last week, the Lions defeated the Greenfield Yellowjackets at home to end a 19-game winning drought and this past Friday night, Dresden traveled to Trenton and put away the Peabody Golden Tide, 27-14.
Additionally, for the second week in a row, the Lions held off their opponent with defense limiting all 14 of Peabody’s points to the second quarter much like they limited all 12 of Greenfield’s points to the first quarter. Even though, offensively, the numbers were similar, the Lions forced the Tide into fumbling the ball over twice and picked off Peabody quarterback Jerry Rogers four times.
The Lions started on offense with a handoff to Zach Jolley up the middle that picked up 6 yards. Quarterback Isaac Butler found a hole and raced down the right sideline. Aided by a Peabody penalty, the Lions gained 10 yards. Butler followed with a 9-yard keeper and Jolley netted 3 and a first down. At the Trenton 17, Butler ran for 6 and flipped the ball over to Daniel Janes for 3. On third-and-one, the Lions were pulled back 5 yards on an illegal procedure call and Butler was sacked 4 yards deep resulting in a long fourth-down situation. Choosing to go for it, Butler was taken down after a 2-yard gain and Dresden turned the ball over on downs.
Peabody took over on its own 14 and got 8 yards on a handoff to A.J. Collier. Qua Johnson’s carry was snuffed out by the DHS defense, but the Golden Tide was pushed forward 10 yards on two straight offsides penalties on Dresden. At its own 32, Peabody picked up 3 yards from Johnson. A pass from Rogers to Kenny Simon missed its mark and a second pass missed, plus the Tide was flagged for offensive pass interference. On third-and-long, Rogers fumbled but recovered and Peabody was forced to punt.
On the Dresden 47, Lion quarterback Dale Hutcherson lost a yard, but Butler gained 7 on a handoff. Hutcherson made good on an 8-yard pass to Logan Thomas down the left sideline. Jolley barreled up the middle for 5 yards and the first quarter ended with a 4-yard pass from Hutcherson to Butler.
From the Peabody 22, Jolley picked up 9 yards through the middle and Hutcherson ran the final 13 yards for the score. Tyler Morefield’s kick was good and the Lions led 7-0 with 11:40 left in the first half.
Back on offense, the Tide gained 4 yards from a Ja’Varis Powell carry and 5 yards on a handoff to Johnson. Dresden was flagged for pass interference on third down putting the home team in Lion territory. Powell picked up a yard and Johnson got 9 on his carry. On first down at the 32-yard line, Rogers connected with Simon in the corner of the end zone for the TD. Matthew Nicholas kicked the extra point and the score was tied, 7-7, with 8:48 left in the first half.
Dresden fumbled the ball away on the first play of its next offensive series, but Rogers’ pass was intercepted by Brandon Elliott on the second play of Peabody’s series.
Quickly back on offense, Butler ran 23 yards up the middle, but was sacked for a 2-yard loss on first down. He connected with Jolley for a 21-yard gain on second-and-long, but down at the Peabody 1, Janes and Jolley were pushed back a yard on their carries. On third-and-goal, however, Janes punched in the touchdown on a sweep to the right. Morefield’s kick made it 14-7 with 5:32 left in the half.
The Tide took a fair catch at their own 46 and needed one play — a 54-yard Collier run — to get back in the end zone. Nicholas’ kick tied the game, 14-14, with 5:22 on the clock.
Both teams swapped punts before Dresden took over for the final two minutes of the half with great field position thanks to a punt that sailed out of bounds. On the Peabody 34, Butler picked up 4 yards on a keeper. His pass fell incomplete, but he picked up 9 yards on his next two carries. Hutcherson’s pass missed on first down at the 20, but found its target in Butler on second down for the score. The extra point was wiped off on an illegal procedure penalty and the Lions took a 20-14 lead into the break.
Peabody had possession to start the third quarter. Rogers was sacked by James Wilson for a 2-yard loss and then threw a pass right into the hands of Dresden’s Elliott who returned it 29 yards for the Lion touchdown. Morefield’s kick put the Lions ahead for good, 27-14, with 11 minutes left in the third .
The rest of the quarter was fraught with turnovers as Elliott picked off his third pass, a pass from Butler was intercepted, Peabody lost two fumbles and Dresden lost one.
The final quarter saw Dresden control the clock, force Peabody to punt on several occasions and hold on for its second straight win.
The Lions were led by Butler who finished with 105 rushing yards, 20 passing yards and a 20-yard touchdown reception. Hutcherson passed for 35 yards, ran for a touchdown and threw for another. Janes had 29 rushing yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Elliott picked off three passes and returned one for a touchdown.
The Lions will crack the seal on their District 13-A schedule this Friday with a visit from the McKenzie Rebels (1-1). The game kicks off 7:30 p.m. at Rotary Field.
