Mustang stud Holder runs amuck vs. W’view | | Posted: Friday, August 21, 2009 4:33 pm
| The high school football season started with a bang on Thursday at UT Martin’s Hardy Graham Stadium. Huntingdon gained the slimmest of victories — a 35-34 triumph — over Westview in a game that signaled the official beginning of the West Tennessee gridiron slate and included two perennial Class AA powerhouses. Mustang running back Kennon Holder, who rushed for a state record 503 yards last season during the first round of the double-A playoffs, totaled 283 yards and four rushing touchdowns on Thursday evening. Holder also caught a 95-yard touchdown pass from H’don quarterback Bam Melton. The Chargers, who scored with 11 seconds remaining in the game, elected to go for the two-point conversion and the win, but Huntingdon was able to stuff DeMarcus Williams short of the goalline. Williams had been effective all evening for W’view, accounting for four touchdowns. Two of Williams’ TDs came on the ground, while the other pair were on kickoff returns. Both teams return to action with more non-district play next week. However, neither program has a break as both opponents advanced to at least the semifinals of the TSSAA playoffs last season. Westview travels to McKenzie next Friday, while Huntingdon hosts Milan. WEEK 0 GAMES Huntingdon 35, Westview 34 Trigg Co. @ Union City Fulton Co. @ Central (Sat.) Fulton City @ Lake Co.
