Two Union City women were charged in connection with the alleged theft of items from We Care Ministries in Martin.

Dorothy D. Haynes, 30, and Melissa A. Nolan, 42, both of 1714 High School Drive, Union City, were issued criminal summonses to appear in court on a charge of theft of property, according to a Martin Police Department report.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday, Martin police responded to We Care Ministries at 503 North Lindell St. in reference to a theft that had just occurred. A witness told police he was driving by the ministry and allegedly saw the two suspects placing merchandise belonging to the establishment into a van. The witness said as he approached the women, they began to remove the  merchandise from the vehicle and place it back onto the property, according to the report.

The items allegedly placed into the vehicle included miscellaneous merchandise totaling about $50 and all of it was returned.

Police said the women freely admitted they had taken and then replaced the items. They were escorted to the Martin Police Department and issued the criminal summonses.
