Cal Ripken tourneys
will keep park busy

Graham Park will be bristling with activity this weekend.
For starters, the Union City 10-and-under All-Star team will be competing at the Cal Ripken State Tournament this weekend in Union City.
Meanwhile, UC’s 9-and-under All-Stars will take part in the Cal Ripken West State Tournament.
The locals 10-year-olds are slated to play at 8 tonight against Hendersonville in opening round action of the event.
Should UC win that game, the locals would advance to the semifinals of the winner’s bracket and face either Huntingdon, Warren County or Trenton at 4 on Sunday afternoon.
If Union City loses tonight, the teams takes on either Franklin or Greenfield in the loser’s bracket Saturday evening at 6.
In the 9-year-old division, UC plays Henry County at 6 tonight.
Should the locals win, they play the winner of today’s game between Martin and Trenton on Saturday at 2.
If Union City loses this evening, the team plays the loser of the aforementioned game on Saturday at 4.

Black Oak’s big loss
is Union City’s gain

Black Oak has lost its jack of all trades.
George Leake, who served as the school’s athletic director, head football coach, girls’ basketball coach and assistant boys’ hoops mentor, has accepted the assistant principal job at Union City Elementary School.
No replacement has been named for Leake, a 1996 graduate of Obion Central, at BO.

All-State baseball list
has 5 from West TN

Five rural West Tennessee baseball players were honored this morning with the release of the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s All-State team.
All of the West TN honorees were in Class AA, where Dyer County won the state championship.
Representing the champion Choctaws, coached by former Union City assistant Preston Ozment, were pitcher J.P. Patterson and shortstop Shea Thomas.
The Jackson North Side duo of shortstop Jacob Alexander and outfielder Corderius Dodd also got a nod to the All-State glitter unit as did Lexington shortstop Russ Henderson.

W’view boys’ mentor
is now J.B. Suiter

J.B. Suiter, brother of Union City High School girls’ basketball coach Eddie Suiter, has been named the boys’ basketball mentor at Westview.
Suiter replaces Brian Haskins, who left the Chargers program for a spot on Kevin McMillan’s women’s bench at UT Martin.
Suiter, who is also the school’s softball coach having led the program to three straight state tournaments, previously served as an assistant to Haskins.
