Edwin F. “Kally” Kallenberg Jr., 88, died June 11, 2009, at his home in Austin, Texas. He was a former resident of Union City.
A memorial service was held 10:30 a.m. June 18 in the solarium of Westminster Manor in Austin. The family will hold a memorial service and burial for both Ed Kallenberg and his wife who preceded him in death, the late Jane Kallenberg, in Union City later this summer.
The family has requested that memorial gifts be directed to Bethany Hills Campgrounds by contacting David Johnson at (615) 952-9184 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home in Austin was in charge of arrangements.
He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Aug. 9, 1920, son of the late Dr. Edwin and Thelma (Graham) Kallenberg. In 1934 the Kallenbergs moved to Union City, where he spent his teen years. He worked summers building highways in Obion County as well as on the construction of the Obion County Court House.
He attended the University of Iowa before earning an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. On June 9, 1943, he graduated from the USNA, was commissioned a U.S. Marine officer and married Jane Kallenberg
As a Marine, 1st Lieutenant Kallenberg served in the Pacific Theatre, including the invasion of Leyte and the repatriation of the Philippine Islands. Soon after the war he returned to Union City. The Kallenbergs were active members of Union City First Christian Church, and in 1954 he was elected Union City’s Young Man of the Year. A career change took him to St. Louis in 1963 where he worked for The National Benevolent Association of the Disciples of Christ Church. In 1969, he moved to Texas where he worked for Texas Christian University and Brite Divinity School as the director of deferred giving.
He is survived by his brother, Don Kallenberg of Pleasanton, Calif., two sons and his daughter-in-law, Tom G. and Janet Kallenberg and Sam B. Kallenberg, all of Durham, N.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Moore and Joe Jones of Austin and Jenny Lee and Jonathan Leinbach of Durham; seven grandchildren, Rachel Kallenberg Ireland, Ross Kallenberg, Ryan Kallenberg, Ginna Jones, Holland Jones, Teddy Leinbach and Jack Leinbach; and six great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bill Kallenberg.
