SHOOTING SPORTS — The Tennessee Wildlife Federation’s (TWF) Tennessee Scholastic Clay Target Program (TNSCTP) recently held the 2009 TNSCTP State Championships at the Montgomery County Shooting Complex in which 1,104 athletes competed in the shotgun sports of trap, skeet and sporting clays. Members of the Obion County Shooting Sports team competing at the contest included (from left) 4-H Shooting Sports Coach Mike Rinker, Rob Holman, Garrett McDaniel, Derek Giffin, Colton Rinker and JT Ragsdale. Competing, but not pictured, were Bret Williams, Taylor Gooch, Connor Rinker, Matthew Thompson, Klayton Hagan and Chandler Fussell. State champion teams were crowned in the three shooting disciplines and in five age-class divisions, as the “Super Bowl” of Tennessee youth trapshooting completed its eighth year. Additionally, several Tennessee teams qualified to compete in the national championships held in Sparta, Ill., in late July. The SCTP is designed to teach the importance of safe firearms handling, responsibility, leadership, teamwork and to promote healthy competition. SCTP provides Tennessee’s youth, grades 5-12, an opportunity to compete in clay target shooting competitions with their peers from across the state.
