A butterfly rests on a coneflower at Big Cypress Tree State Natural Area | | From coneflowers to Jacob Cline Monarda, also known as “Bee Balm,” the summer wildflowers are in full bloom at Big Cypress Tree State Natural Area located just outside of Greenfield.
Park manager Bill McCall invites everyone in the area to stop for a spell and enjoy nature at its best. Benches are conveniently located on four sides of the 17 bed wildflower garden that houses several different species of wildflowers that bloom at different times throughout the year, offering a show from early spring until frost.
“The goal of this wild flower garden is to add beauty to the park, attract butterflies and hummingbirds, and to provide a place where one can peacefully enjoy nature,” McCall shared. McCall said photographing the park is welcomed and encouraged. “The flower garden is there for the enjoyment of all,” he added.
Picking or disturbing the flowers and plants is prohibited. All plants on Big Cypress Tree State Natural Area, living or dead, may not be disturbed or removed and are protected by law.
The park has adequate picnic facilities including a picnic shelter, grills, restrooms and water. Groups may reserve the shelter by calling the park at 731-235-2700.
There is no fee for reserving or using the shelter. A ballfield with backstop is available as well as a basketball goal. For those who like to hike, a .3 of a mile paved walking trail is available. There are swings and a play structure for the younger visitors. The park is located 5 miles west of Greenfield. From Hwy. 45E, turn west onto Hwy. 445, go five miles and turn right at the park sign.
