Ben Wilkes, 56, of Union City, who died June 5, 2009, in Hattiesburg, Miss. Services were 3 p.m. Sunday at Union City Second Baptist Church, with the Revs. Eddie Mallonee, Bobby Moore and Charles T. Williams officiating. Burial followed in Cates Cemetery near Martin. White-Ranson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Randy Chapman, Paul Adams, Donald Dugger, Paul Olexa, George Floyd and Larry Essary. He was born Oct. 6, 1952, in Memphis, son of Claudia (Norton) Wilkes of Union City and the late Ben Wilkes Sr. He married the former Kay Mansfield April 30, 1983. She survives. He earned a master of divinity degree from Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and was a 1974 graduate of Union University in Jackson. He also attended Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary in Memphis. He was a former youth pastor and associate pastor at Broadway Baptist Church in Memphis and at Woodland Baptist Church in Jackson. He had also served as a pastor in Texas and as the former pastor of both Trinity Baptist Church in Manchester and Union City Second Baptist Church, where he was a member. Wilkes served on the Board of Ethics and Religious Liberties with Dr. Richard Land and, after his retirement from the ministry, went on to open a family business in Union City. Survivors also include two daughters, Abbey Wilkes and Bonnie Wilkes, both of Union City; two sons, Ben Wilkes III and Peter Wilkes, both of Union City; his sister and brother-in-law, Amy and Andrew Shiles of Germantown; his brother-in-law, Steve Mansfield of Dallas; and his sister-in-law, Lisa Reynolds of Collierville.
