Eligible veterans and service members could receive help with education
On Aug. 1, the Post 9/11 GI bill, also known as the Chapter 33 program, becomes effective. It provides Veterans Administration benefits to eligible veterans and service members who served a minimum of 90 days on active duty after Sept. 10, 2001.
The program also applies to certain qualifying dependents.
In addition to tuition and fees, which will be paid directly to the school the veteran chooses to attend, students may be eligible to receive:
• a monthly housing allowance;
• a books and supplies stipend;
• tutorial assistance;
• work-study benefits;
• a rural allowance;
• licensing and certification fees as qualified.
“There are significant changes in educational benefits available to veterans,” said Sandra Rockett, director of financial aid at Dyersburg State Community College. “Each veteran will need to carefully evaluate all of the benefits available so that he or she can make the best long-term choice. We offer assistance through the Financial Aid Office on the Dyersburg campus and the DSCC Jimmy Naifeh Center.”
