Smothers celebrate silver anniversary Posted: Wednesday, May 20, 2009 3:20 pm SILVER ANNIVERSARY — Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Lenod Smothers of Union City will be celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. He married the former Opal Sylvia Parnell May 14, 1984, at First Assembly of God on Todd Street in Union City. The Rev. Larry Bysee of Union City officiated. She is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter Parnell of Jonesboro, Ark. She is a housewife. He is the son of the late Bobbie Gertrude Bell of Blytheville, Ark., and Garrett Smothers of Weakley County. He retired after 30 years as a barber in Martin. Mrs. Smothers has five children, Bobbie Yates and Linda Brown, both of Wingo, Ky., Walter Busby of Crossville, the late Wayne Busby of Boise, Idaho, and Ricky Luten of Americus, Ga. She has eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Smothers has three children, Jeannette (Smothers) Priest of Austin, Texas, John Michael Smothers of Dover and James Donald Smothers of Burna, Ky.
