The University of Tennessee at Martin Office of Extended Campus and Continuing Education is offering a variety of non-degree health care professional training programs.
EKG Technician
Certification Program
Scheduled for June 15 through Aug. 3 from 6-9:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, this course will be offered at Jackson State Community College.
This comprehensive 50-hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG Technicians and to take the American Society of Phlebotomy Technician (ASPT)-Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam and other national certification exams. It course will include important practice and background information on anatomy of the heart and physiology, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, laboratory assisting, electrocardiography and echocardiography.
The EKG Technician Certi-fication Program includes a graded final exam to help prepare students for the ASPT-EKG Technician Exam. The fee for this course is $999. Textbooks are included.
Pharmacy Technician
Program
This course, scheduled for June 16 through Aug. 4 from 6-9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, will be offered on the campus of UT Martin, at the UT Martin Ripley Center and at Jackson State Community College.
This comprehensive 50-hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s exam. Technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings, working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.
The Pharmacy Technician Certification Program includes a graded final exam to help prepare students for the PTCB exam. The fee for this course is $999. Textbooks are included.
Phlebotomy Technician
Program
This course is scheduled for June 15 through Aug. 24 from 6-9:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on the Saturdays of June 20, July 11 and Aug. 1. It will be held at UT Martin and at Jackson State Community College.
This 90-hour Phlebotomy Technician Program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely. Classroom and lab work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods.
There is no outside externship rotation included with this program. The fee for this course is $1,599. Textbooks are included.
Surgical Technician Program
Scheduled for 6-9:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 16 through Aug. 4, this course will be held at Jackson State Community College.
This 50-hour course will cover the surgical technician’s role beginning from pre-op preparation, during the operative procedure and finish with postoperative room break down.
The objectives of the class do not include a state or national certification, which generally requires at least two years of formal education. The fee for this course is $999. Textbooks are included.
