Union City in tune for league meet
The Union City Middle School boys’ track team tuned up for the West Tennessee Athletic Conference meet later this week by beating both Lauderdale Middle School and Dyersburg on Monday.

The Tornadoes, who won eight of 11 running events to rally from behind in the team standings, finished with 60.5 points and edge LMS, which accumulated 58. Dyersburg totaled 34.5 points.

In the girls’ competition, UC was second, six points behind Lauderdale Middle, which totaled 56. Dyersburg was third with 34 points.

Keylon Hyde and Drake Parker led the Tornado boys — each with three first-place finishes.

Both were part of the 400- and 800-meter relay teams that were triumphant. Hyde also won the 100-yard dash, while Parker led the pack in the 200 meters.

Jamie Hyde and Keontre Murrell were the other members of the victorious 400- and 800-meter relay units.

Daniel Williamson took first place in both the mile and two-mile competitions, while Parker Dotson gave the Purple and Gold points by winning the 800-meter run.

The mile relay quartet of Dalton Parrish, Nirobi Brooks, Richard Ramos and Brett Gore also claimed first place.

Brooks placed second in the hurdles, while Jamie Hyde was behind Parker with a runnerup finish in the 200 meters.

In the field events, Travis Rutland placed second in the high jump, while Alex Darnall was the runnerup in the discus.

The UCMS girls turned in a quality performance with four first-place finishes.

Jasmine Dysart won the shot put, while Jackie Hudson claimed top honors in the discus and was second behind her teammate in the shot. Brandy Henry led the field in the 400-meter race.

The 4 X 400 relay team of Henry, Shannon Wiggins, Tara Elam and Destiny Powers also came in first.

Aaliyah Daniels was second in the 200-meter run, while the relay entry consisting of Wiggins, Sadie Hollis, Elam and Alisha Davis was second in both the 4 X 100 and 4 X 200 competitions.

The WTAC meet is scheduled for Thursday in Dyersburg, the competition set to begin at 3:30.
