MIAMI (AP) — Lester Hudson scored a season-high 31 points to lead Tennessee-Martin past Fordham 82-70 and win the Florida International University Holiday Tournament.
Union City High School product Marquis Weddle added 12 points and Delrico Lane had 10 points and 10 rebounds for UTM (6-5), which has won four straight.
En route to the event’s title, Tennessee-Martin also defeated FIU 77-76 on Saturday in the opener of the three-team event.
During Sunday’s win over Fordham, Hudson was 9-of-15 from the floor and he sank all 13 of his free throws.
He also had seven rebounds and six assists.
Weddle finished 4-for-11 from field goal range with a 3-of-6 evening from beyond the arc.
Freshman and fellow UC product MJ Brown logged just eight minutes, but he added four points.
Fordham (2-8) was led by Jio Fontan, who scored 17 points. Mike Moore added 16.
UT Martin used a 13-1 run in the first half to spark a 44-30 lead at halftime and led by as many as 18 points.
The Skyhawks shot 50 percent (28-of-56) from the floor compared to 36.1 percent for the Rams (22-of-61).
At the charity stripe, UT Martin made 23-of-28 free throws.
Fordham will face FIU today in the tournament’s final game, which will decide second place for the event.
On Saturday, Hudson scored 23 points and Weddle added 21 to lead Tennessee-Martin past Florida International in overtime in the opening game of the event.
Weddle hit two free throws with 9.5 seconds left in overtime to give Tennessee-Martin (5-5) its season-high third consecutive victory.
FIU’s Harley Fuller made a layup with 32 seconds left in overtime for a 76-75 lead, but missed two key free throws with 14 seconds remaining.
Michael Dominguez scored 21 points and Freddy Asprilla added 19 and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Golden Panthers (4-10), who have lost six straight.
Hudson, who entered the game ranked eighth nationally in scoring (23.8 points per game), did not score until 3:28 remained in the first half.
His 21 points after halftime extended his 20-plus scoring streak to 12 games.
Hudson was 7-for-21 from the floor and made all nine of his free throws.
Hudson made three free throws with 4.9 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime tied at 71.
After Weddle’s two free throws put the Skyhawks ahead 77-76 in overtime, a short runner by Dominquez bounced off the back rim at the buzzer.
Brown played ten minutes and he contributed a basket and an assist.
While the Skyhawks thrived at the free throw line, FIU struggled making just 17-of-35 attempts from the line.
The Skyhawks’ defense also forced 24 turnovers.
UT Martin’s Lane had seven of the Skyhawks’ 12 steals in the game.
FIU built a 33-28 lead in the first half.
Hudson was limited to two points and two rebounds in the first half.
The score was tied twice in the first half and the lead changed five times in the first 20 minutes.
The Skyhawks shot a disappointing 43 percent from the field and 25 percent from 3-point range.
The UT Martin men return to action Wednesday at Central Arkansas.
