The Messenger. 12.29.08 Dennis Wayne Gaskins, 52, of Memphis, brother of Karen Carter of Union City, died Dec. 24, 2008, at The Med in Memphis. Services were 2 p.m. Sunday at Johnson-Williams Funeral Home in Newbern, with burial following in Rehobeth Cemetery in Newbern. The Rev. Eric Buress officiated and members of the Dyer County Rescue Squad color guard were pallbearers. He was born Dec. 24, 1956, in Flint, Mich., son of Dessie (Holland) Gaskins Hammersley of Dyersburg and the late Virgil Gaskins. He was married to Linda Gaskins, who survives, and was a former employee of Buick Motor Division in Flint, Mich., and of Griffin and Green Storage Co. in Memphis. He was a graduate of Carman Senior High School in Flint and had received a bachelor of science degree from Shelby State Community College in Memphis. He was a volunteer for Adapt and was a Mason. Survivors also include his stepfather, David Hammersley of Dyersburg; two stepdaughters, Kim Barhum of Petal, Miss., and Karen Craft of Orlando, Fla.; his stepson, Russell Williamson of Memphis; two brothers and his sister-in-law, Charles “Chuck” Gaskins of Dyersburg and Greg and Brenda Gaskins of Newbern; his brother-in-law, Rodney Carter of Union City; and two grandchildren.
