Basil L. Chappell, 79, of Dresden, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bowlin Funeral Home, with Dr. Don McCulley officiating. Burial was at Gearin’s Chapel Cemetery near Greenfield. Matthew Chappell, Michael Chappell, Brent Perry, David Tuck, Mike Wilson and Ricky Cobb served as pallbearers. Chappell was born in Weakley County, son of the late Walter Roy and Mary Alice Huggins Chappell. He was a farmer, landlord and Dresden policeman. He was the widower of Linda Lou Mathis Chappell and a member of Gearin’s Chapel Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Mike L. Chappell and Mickey W. (Shirley) Chappell, both of Dresden; two sisters, Peggy (Robert Ray) Vickers of Sharon and Deloris (Michael) Lowe of Fulton, Ky.; a brother, Jerry (Louisa) Chappell of Santa Rosa, N.M.; four grandchildren, Matthew Chappell, Michael Chappell, Jessica Chappell and Jennifer Chappell, all of Dresden; step-grandchild, Ausie Welch; a great-grandchild, Nathan Scott.
