 Remember when takes a look back at the local stories from the files of The Messenger that took place 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 years ago. 30 Years Ago Dec. 26 — The Kenton girls earned the Halls’ Lady Tiger Invitational championship after a 54-44 bettering of Jackson South Side in the event’s finale. Darlene Woods pitched in a team-high 23 points. After the title tilt, Woods and Cara Daws were both named to the event’s All-Tournament team as Kenton’s representatives. Dec. 28 — The South Fulton boys coasted to a 68-54 over Medina. Five Red Devils finished in double figures during the 14-point triumph. Ronald Walker was the top performer out of those players with 17 points on the evening, while Kent Bivens and Andre Cruse both pitched in 15. Otherwise, Donald Walker finished with 11 and Mike Hutchens contributed 10 for South Fulton. 20 Years Ago Dec. 27 — The Hillcrest boys claimed the championship at the Gleason Lions’ Club Christmas Tournament. Leading the charge for the Cougars during the 50-41 title game victory over Medina was Robin Cude (21 points). With H’crest’s run to the event’s trophy, the squad improved to 14-2 on the campaign. After the completion of the title game, Cude was joined by Chris Wiggins on the All-Tournament team. Dec. 30 — The wheels fell off of Union City’s high-octane wagon in an 80-71 setback against Cairo, Ill. In the game played at the 25th annual Carbondale Holiday Classic, the Twisters committed a season-high 26 turnovers. John Parham was the top contributor for UC with 23 points, while Tyrone Eskew was good for 13 and Stanley Caldwell 10. 10 Years Ago Dec. 31 — Obion Central fell 69-67 to Duquoin (Ill.), but they bettered Springfield (Ill.) 79-70 during the holiday basketball slate. During the loss, Jason Harrell offered a team-high 24 points, while Adam Griffin and Michael Pardue each reached double digits with 13 and 11, respectively. Griffin was the top man in the victory with 19 points, while Pardue pitched in 13 for the Rebels. 5 Years Ago Dec. 31 — Union City worked overtime to earn third place in the Martin Lions’ Club Christmas Tournament. The Tornadoes downed Liberty 78-77 when Marquis Weddle converted a 3-point play with 10 seconds remaining. Overall, Weddle led the way for UC with 22 points, while Antawn Coby offered 18. Ray Smith, Steve Young and Xavier Robinson all reached double digits for the Golden Tornadoes with 10 markers each. 1 Year Ago Dec. 28 — The Union City boys improved to 14-0 after a 79-71 victory over Little Rock Mills in the First Midwest Bank Shootout at Poplar Bluff, Mo. MJ Brown poured in a team-high 28 during the victory, while Lavan Mosley added 20 for UC. Also reaching double digits was Ryan Simpson with 11 markers. Dec. 31 — Union City’s girls earned fifth place at the Martin Lions’ Club Christmas Tournament. The Lady Tornadoes earned the top spot in the loser’s bracket after a 67-55 bettering of Crockett County. Marcetta Ross and Mary Steward shared the top contributor spot with 13 points apiece. Meanwhile, Shenisha Huff totaled 13 markers, while Allison McCullough and Micah Warford both contributed 11. Published in The Messenger 12.24.08
