An Obion County man who was injured in a four-vehicle crash Monday night during wintry weather has died.
Lawrence W. Brinkley, 80, of the Pleasant Hill community near Rives died Thursday at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in Jackson. Brinkley had sustained injuries in an accident that occurred about 5:20 p.m. Monday on East Reelfoot Avenue at Hillcrest Street, near the hospital, in Union City.
According to a Union City Police Department report, Brinkley was westbound on East Reelfoot Avenue when he lost control of his 2001 Chevrolet Impala due to the icy weather conditions and collided head-on with a 2003 Mazda pickup driven by Davy Lynn Jones, 47, of 114 Siegel Road, Tiptonville, who was eastbound and was stopped in the turn lane waiting to turn left onto Hillcrest Street at the time. After colliding with the other vehicle, Brinkley continued westbound, accelerated and crossed into eastbound traffic, colliding head-on with a 2007 Hyundai Sonata driven by Chariti Turner, 25, of 624 East Palmer St., Union City, who was eastbound in the outside lane, police reported.
A fourth driver, Tiffany Byars, 37, of 1216 Lone Oak St., Union City, told police she could not stop in time due to ice on the roadway and her 2006 Hyundai Tucson collided with both Brinkley’s vehicle and Ms. Turner’s vehicle by going between them.
All four drivers were traveling alone at the time of the accident, according to police. Brinkley and Ms. Turner were both taken by Regional Emergency Medical Services ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City immediately following the accident and Brinkley was later transferred to the Jackson hospital. Tragically, Brinkley’s granddaughter, 28-year-old Lisa Hilton of Union City, died just three months ago — on Sept. 7 — in a traffic accident on West Reelfoot Avenue at Everett Boulevard in Union City.
