The Martin Middle School Panthers made it a county three-peat, but the second-seeded Greenfield Junior High Yellowjackets didn’t let it happen without putting up a fight.
Champs — The Martin Middle School Panthers basketball team claimed the championship hardware in the Weakley County Tournament. The Panthers edged the Greenfield Yellowjackets, 43-38, to take the title Thursday night in Greenfield.
Martin, the top seed, rallied in the fourth quarter to take a 43-38 win over the Yellowjackets in the 2008 Weakley County Tournament title game Thursday night in Greenfield.
With 3:31 left in the fourth quarter, a Zack Grooms free throw pushed the Greenfield lead to three at 37-34.
Martin squandered several chances to cut into the gap, repeatedly missing jumpers and threes. However, the Panthers continued to crash the boards and grab offensive rebounds, providing more opportunities.
Finally with 2:22 left in the game and the crowd roaring, Martin’s R.J. Scott hit a five-foot leaner on the left baseline. Fouled on the play, he nailed the free throw for a 37-all tie.
The Panther defense then forced a turnover.
Mason Capps gave Martin the lead when he grabbed another offensive rebound and put it in for a 39-37 Panther lead with 1:49 left to play.
The Panther press forced another turnover but failed to capitalize on three shots before Greenfield’s Hunter Crouse hauled in the rebound.
A foul sent Jacket Tony Robinson to the line where he made 1-of-2 to trim the gap to 39-38 with 68 ticks left.
A Capps layup off an Antonio Hogard pass bumped the MMS lead to 41-38 at the 49-second mark. On the GJH end, a miss was rebounded by Martin’s Alex Ross. The Jackets forced a turnover, but missed their final two shots while Martin added a Hogard layup for insurance and the 43-38 victory.
It was the Jackets who had to rally first. Martin scorched the nets for 18 point in the first quarter, led by 6 points from Hogard, for an 18-8 lead after one quarter of action.
Martin slowed down in the second quarter, while Greenfield found the range, connecting for 17 points, including a pair of key 3-pointers from Hunter Moore. At halftime, Martin’s lead was trimmed to a point, 26-25.
In the third, GJH held Martin to four points. Greenfield took its first lead, 27-26, on a Crouse layup and held its largest edge at 29-26 on a Robinson steal and layup midway through the quarter. At the end of the third, the Jackets were on top 31-30, leading up to the late drama.
Scott topped Martin with 13 points followed by 12 points from Hogard. Greenfield’s Robinson led all scorers with 18.
