Rip it down — Dresden’s Eric Evans hauls in a rebound during his team’s loss to Lake County Friday night at Dresden.
Trailing by 10 at halftime, the Dresden Lady Lions did a much better job of defensive rebounding over the final two quarters in order to rally past the Lake County Lady Falcons for a 54-47 win Friday night in Dresden.
The Falcon boys made it a split by pulling away late for a 74-59 win in the finale.
In the girls game, Dresden came out of halftime facing a 30-20 deficit. The Lady Lions fell behind by missing open layups and allowing Lake County several second-chance baskets.
After the intermission, Dresden crashed the boards and kept Lake County at bay. Dresden posted the first seven points of the third quarter to cut the gap to three, but the Lady Falcons answered with a 7-0 run to regain a double-digit edge at 37-27 with 4:22 left in the third.
However, LC spark plug T.T. Flowers went to the bench with her fourth foul seconds later.
With the Lady Falcons missing their go-to player, Dresden turned up the heat and used an 8-2 run to claw back within four, 39-35, at the end of the third.
An Alex Glisson 3-pointer gave DHS its first lead of the game, 40-39, with 6:54 left. The Lady Lions never trailed again, outscoring Lake County 19-8 in the fourth. Dresden hit 11-of-14 free throws in the fourth to preserve the win. Marlee Mason had eight of her 13 points in the quarter and Erica Glisson added six of her game-high 17 points for DHS in the frame.
Alex Glisson provided the Lady Lions with huge minutes off the bench as Dresden’s Breanna Dubruiel and Kaci Robbins were both out due to injury.
Lake County held an 18-15 lead after a quarter as Mariah Matthews started hot with nine of her team-high 16 points and Flowers had five of her 15.
In the boys game, patience on offense and a hot shooting touch gave Dresden the lead in the first quarter. The Lions scorched the nets for 22 points in the frame. Lake County struggled to put in 10 points. Dresden was quick to grab the misses. For DHS in the frame, Eric Evans tallied 10 of his 16, including a pair of treys.
Matt McCulley’s layup, part of a team-high 19 points, bumped the Lions’ lead to 14, 24-10, early in the second quarter.
Calius Hackett then got hot, nailing two 3-pointers, part of a 19-point effort, to ignite the Falcons. With two seconds left in the half, Carlos Young’s 10-footer gave Lake County its first lead at 38-36.
The Falcons never trailed again, holding a 55-51 edge after three quarters on the way to the 74-59 victory.
