A Fulton businessman was injured early Saturday when he apparently attempted to thwart a robbery at his downtown department store. Alex “Junior” Noffel, owner of Noffel’s Department Store at 422 Lake St. in Fulton, sustained injuries in an altercation that occurred during a hold-up about 8:30 a.m., according to a press release from the Fulton Police Department. Noffel told police he had been robbed at gunpoint by two suspects who entered the store and demanded money. He said one of the suspects produced a handgun while demanding the cash. Police reported that a physical altercation developed when Noffel “jumped” the suspect who had the handgun. At that point, the second suspect assisted the first suspect in subduing Noffel. The suspects then allegedly took keys from Noffel and removed some cash bags from the store, according to the press release from Fulton Assistant Police Chief Jere Hughes, the department’s public information officer. The suspects fled in an unknown direction. Noffel was treated at the scene by personnel from the Twin City Ambulance Service. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone who may have any information about Saturday’s robbery is asked to contact the Fulton Police Department at (270) 472-3141 or their local law enforcement agency.
