Over 2,200 gift-filled shoeboxes were collected in Obion County alone during last month’s National Collection Week for Operation Christmas Child, a ministry of the international Christian relief organization Samaritan’s Purse.
The total shoeboxes collected in Obion, Weakley and Henry counties was 5,280, with a total of 2,205 shoeboxes collected in Obion County, according to a spokesman.
“This is a job well done and will be appreciated by needy children throughout the world,” the spokesman said.
A total of over 150 volunteers gave their time to help at the local collection center at Troy First Baptist Church and the relay centers at Bible Union Baptist Church in Martin and two Baptist churches in the Paris and Henry County area.
Organizers of the local effort have expressed their appreciation to the many residents and volunteers who donated items or time to make this year’s shoebox drive a success.
“Christmas is a time for giving and sharing the word of Christ,” the spokesman said.
