The Gleason Bulldogs’ more determined effort on the defensive boards helped them pull away for a 62-39 victory over the visiting Bradford Red Devils Tuesday night in Gleason.
Soar — Gleason senior guard Colin Bennett drives past Red Devil defender Jeremy Harris for a second-half layup in the Bulldogs’ 62-39 win over Bradford Tuesday night.
In a very physical confrontation, the Gleason girls fell to the Lady Red Devils, 48-39.
After repeatedly allowing second, third and even fourth and fifth shots per possession to the Devils in the first half, the Gleason boys began to crash the boards and limit Red Devil scoring chances.
The improved rebounding showing allowed Gleason to stretch out its one-point halftime edge, 26-25.
Senior guard Colin Bennett began to find his way to the rim for layups, pouring in 14 of his 17 points after halftime.
Foul trouble for the Devils also helped Gleason pull away. Bradford had three players — D’Marquis Wells, Colby Roberson and Jeremy Harris — foul out in the second half.
The Dawg lead hit double digits for the first time on a Bennett layup with four and a half minutes to play in the third. By the end of the quarter, Gleason’s lead stood at 13 points, 46-33, on the way to the 62-39 win.
Center Ben Sumner helped keep the Dawgs in the game in the first half with 11 of his game-high 19 points and an intimidating shot-blocking effort in the paint.
Still, second-chance points kept Bradford close. At the end of the first quarter, Gleason was in front, 15-13, before the Devils shaved a point off that lead in the second quarter.
In addition to double-digit nights from Sumner and Bennett, Gleason’s Ben Rollins added 12 points and Preston Frazier put in 10. For Bradford, Wells was top point man with 11 points followed by 10 from Harris.
In the girls game, Bradford used its size, physical play and a tenacious defense to frustrate the host Lady Bulldogs and earn a 62-39 victory.
Bradford forced five GHS turnovers in the first 3:34 including a pair of 10-second violations against the fullcourt press. As a result, Gleason trailed 4-3.
After a timeout, the Lady Dawgs got a pair of treys from Kim Edenfield and five points from Jenna Frazier for a 13-all tie at the end of the first quarter.
GHS turnovers, misses and frustrations allowed the Lady Devils to build a seven-point edge, 26-19, with two minutes left in the half. By the break, Gleason had cut the gap back to four points at 26-22.
In the third, the Lady Dawgs got off to a hot start with a 10-3 run to grab a 32-29 lead. The scoring run came in spite of more physical play from Bradford that saw Frazier decked with an elbow to the face that resulted in a cut cheek and an outburst from GHS head coach Randy Frazier.
The younger Frazier picked up her fourth foul with 1:47 left in the third, but poor free-throw shooting in the quarter (3-of-11) kept Bradford from pulling away. Still, the Devils led 35-33 with one quarter remaining.
Gleason cut the gap to two, 39-37, on Taylor Stout freebies with 5:24 remaining, but Bradford found the range from the free-throw line in the fourth (6-of-8) to ride to the 48-39 win.
Frazier topped GHS with 11 points, while Sarah Combs’ 14 points led Bradford.
