Panther squads earn byes when county tourney begins
The Martin Middle School Lady Panthers and Panthers are the top seeds and will have first round byes when the annual Weakley County Tournament for junior high and middle school teams gets under way Saturday afternoon at the host Greenfield High School gymnasium. Action on Saturday will include one quarterfinal and one semifinal in both girls and boys action.
On Saturday, the first game will feature the No. 4 Dresden Lady Lions vs. the No. 5 Sharon Lady Eagles tipping off at noon. At 1:30 p.m., the No. 4 Gleason Bulldogs square off against the No. 5 Sharon Eagles. A semifinal featuring the No. 2 Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets taking on the No. 3 Gleason Lady Bulldogs will follow with tipoff at 3 p.m. The final game of Saturday will begin at 4:30 and showcase the No. 2 Greenfield Yellowjackets vs. the No. 3 Dresden Lions in a boys semifinal.
After those opening games, the other semifinals will be held on Monday night at Greenfield. The top-seeded Lady Panthers will face the winner of the Dresden vs. Sharon game with tipoff at 6 p.m. followed by the MMS boys team vs. the winner of the Gleason vs. Sharon quarterfinal matchup.
Also on Monday night, the members of the All-Reelfoot Conference team will be announced and honored for their efforts on the football field at halftime of the girls game.
The county girls and boys champions will be crowned on Thursday night at Greenfield with the girls title game scheduled to begin at 6 and the boys final following.
