30 Years Ago
Dec. 4 — Union City swept Dyer County in a basketball twinbill. The Twisters downed DC 64-43, while their female counterparts were 58-30 victors. In the boys’ game, James Bass poured in 26 points and Larry Jones added 15 as they both pulled down 15 rebounds. For the Hurricanes, Debbie Christian led the way with a team-high 19 markers during the victory over Dyer County.
Dec. 6 — A total of eight locals were honored with nods to the All-District 13AA football team. Defensive linemen Eric Maddox, Darryl Payne and Jerome McElrath joined offensive lineman Gordon Fox, running back Billy Wilkins and kicker Mark Wilson as Union City representatives on the glitter unit. Obion Central’s Terry Quinn and Ken Russell also were part of the 13AA All-Star team.

Dec. 6 — Hillcrest and Dresden swapped junior high basketball blowouts. The Cougars, coached by Dresden alum John Glisson, bettered the Weakley Countians 76-31, while the H’crest girls fell 55-28. During the boys’ victory, Chris Wiggins accounted for a team-high 22 points, while Robin Cude was good for a dozen. In the girls’ defeat, Kim Slaughter put in half (14 points) of the Lady Cougars’ total offensive output.
Dec. 7 — Obion Central swept South Fulton in a county rivalry basketball twinbill. The Rebels were 72-69 victors, while their female equals won 60-53. In the boys’ game, Denver Whitby exploded for 29 points, while Scott Northam contributed 13 for OC. SF had four players in double digits. Tab Vowell led that list with 20 markers. In the girls’ game, Tracy Boucher tossed in 20 for the victorious Lady Rebels, while Jennifer Blurton added 17 off the bench. Devilette Cheryl Aiken scored a game-high 21, and Dana Harris contributed 18.

Dec. 4 — George Evans hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Union City freshman boys a 54-53 victory over Westview. Dwayne Ware was the top overall performer for UC during the triumph as he tossed in 13. The boys’ win gained a measure of revenge for the UC girls, who fell 31-26 to the Lady Chargers. Chelsea Smith pitched in 16 during that defeat.
Dec. 8 — South Fulton swept Fulton City on the junior high basketball court. The Devilettes spanked FC 48-13, while the SF boys were 60-52 victors. During the girls’ game, Mindy Tharpe pitched in a game-high 12 points, while Tiffany Gordon tacked on 11. The Lady Bulldogs were paced by Christy Phelps’ 11-point effort. The SF boys got 29 markers from Josh Townsend and 14 from Da’Ryan Jones. Fulton City’s top performer was Pat Rose with 25.

Dec. 5 — Obion Central quarterback Wes Moore was honored as The Messenger/Obion County Prep Football Player of the Year. Moore led OC to a share of the Region 7-3A title and he accumulated 2,144 passing yards his senior season. During his illustrious career at Central, Moore piled up 7,681 total offensive yards and he had a hand in 86 touchdowns.
Dec. 9 — South Fulton and Hillcrest split an Obion County School System basketball twinbill. The Lady Cougars more than doubled SF 52-24, while the Red Devils were 36-34 victors. In the girls’ game, Gentry Reedy racked up 15 points for Hillcrest, while Brandy Orr added in 10 for the victors. Cherissa Vinson was the top Devilette during the loss as she pitched in 10. For the SF boys, Corbin Hawks tossed in a game-high 13. Hillcrest’s Brandon Smith totaled a dozen markers and Corey Gibson finished with a double-double (11 points and 10 rebounds).

Dec. 5 — Union City’s boys and South Fulton’s girls had the same winning fate during a District 14A twinbill. The Devilettes came out victorious 51-40, while the Twisters downed SF 92-48. In the girls’ game, Maeghan Eaves was South Fulton’s leading lady with 16 points, with Brooke Kane and Chelsea Cox each adding a dozen. Allison McCullough was the only Lady Tornado to finish in double digits as she put in 15. During the boys’ blowout, Tony Wilkins led the way with 16 points, while Nic Brooks added 15. Red Devil David Shepherd had 15 in the loss.
Dec. 7 — Overtime yielded the desired result for the Hillcrest girls in a 42-38 bettering of Lake Road. However, the LR boys extracted a measure of revenge in the nightcap as they whipped the Cougars 47-15. Kelsey Gibson powered H’crest with 18 points. Charity Howard topped the Lady Generals’ scoring summary with 14 points. For the LR boys, Colton Woodward dropped in seven points. Hillcrest’s best effort came from Cameron Green (five points).
