KNOXVILLE (AP) — Newly hired Tennessee assistant coach David Reaves won’t directly report to coach Lane Kiffin, his brother-in-law, in order to comply with a university nepotism policy.
According to the school policy, no employee is allowed to directly supervise a relative defined as a parent, grandparent, spouse, sibling, in-law, foster relationship or any other family member that lives in the same household.
Tennessee athletic department spokeswoman Tiffany Carpenter told The Knoxville News Sentinel that Reaves will instead report to the director of football operations, Bruce Warwick, who will then report to a senior administrator in the athletic department.
The nepotism policy was enacted in 1999 at the university in Knoxville “to prevent conflict of interest in decision-making due to factors of kinship in reporting relationships among employees.”
Reaves was previously an assistant at the University of South Carolina.
Kiffin reportedly is also considering bringing his father, Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, to Tennessee once the NFL season ends.
