Up and in — Gleason’s Jordan Howington elevates for a jumper in the lane over Carroll Academy’s Alex Johnson during the Bulldogs’ 75-20 victory Friday night. Howington finished with a game-high 16 points.
The Gleason High School basketball teams can only dream about the rest of the season being as easy as their season-opening wins over visiting Carroll Academy Friday night in Tater Town.
The Gleason Lady Bulldogs cruised to a 78-5 win over the Lady Jaguars, while the GHS boys team earned a 75-20 victory.
In the girls game, Gleason head coach Randy Frazier kept his starters on the floor for limited minutes in the contest as the Lady Bulldogs dominated the action. Every GHS player saw action and all except one put points on the scoreboard.
The inside junior tandem of Jenna Frazier and Taylor Stout combined with the outside shooting of guard Kim Edenfield to propel Gleason to a 29-3 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Frazier scored all of her 12 total points in the first frame, while Stout added 11 of her team-high 13 points. Edenfield buried both of her 3-pointers in the quarter.
Heather Todd’s trey provided the lone CA points in the opening quarter.
Frazier’s bench helped the starters hold Carroll Academy scoreless in the second quarter. While the Lady Jags’ side of the scoreboard never changed, Gleason added 20 more points, including seven from Sara Hensley and four from Maggie Lowrance for a huge 49-3 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Gleason got a 3-pointer each from Elizabeth Terrell and Ashley Coble while again keeping Carroll Academy off the scoreboard for a 63-3 lead heading into the fourth.
Todd finally hit the Lady Jags second and final basket of the game in the fourth quarter, while Hollie Townes pitched in all of her eight points for Gleason as the Lady Dawgs cruised to the 78-5 victory.
In the boys game, Gleason seniors Colin Bennett and Evan Orr set the standard early in the Bulldogs’ 75-20 win over Carroll Academy.
Bennett notched six of his 13 points, while Orr pitched in with nine of his 11 as the Bulldogs built a 19-7 advantage by the end of the first frame.
In the second quarter, Preston Frazier’s six points countered five points from Carroll Academy’s Devin Wagner. In addition to Frazier’s points, Gleason got four from Ben Rollins and a basket from John Johnson to stretch its lead to 20 points, 35-15, at the halftime break.
In the third quarter, the Dawgs controlled the paint with the play of Ben Sumner and Jordan Howington. The pair combined for 10 of the Dawgs’ 24 points in the quarter with Howington putting in six points. Frazier and Bennett both added five point and Gabe Lowrance had his lone basket of the game as the Dawg lead grew to 59-18 by the end of the third quarter.
DeAndre Larrue’s trey accounted for the only Jaguar points in the third.
In the fourth quarter, Howington dominated the boards on both ends. The sophomore center poured in 10 of his game-high 16 points and helped limit Carroll Academy to two points on a Larrue basket in the final quarter.
In addition to Howington’s points, Rollins was a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
