Cumberland County Playhouse presents its fifth Nutcracker production Dec. 4-8 on the Mainstage in Crossville, sponsored by Hughes Real Estate Services of Crossville and Fairfield Glade. The production stars a leading Russian professional dancer, Evgueny Tourdiev, as “The Prince”, and Tennessee dancer Aven Chadwell, (trained with Russian dancers Eldar Valiev and Lilia Valieva in CCP’s Dance Education program), as Princess Clara. The CCP Dance Directors, both new American citizens, trained at the home of the first Nutcracker, The Kirov Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Nutcracker and CCP’s Education Program is sponsored by Hughes Real Estate Services of Crossville and Fairfield Glade. A senior at Stone Memorial High School, Ms. Chadwell has trained at CCP for 11 years, and teaches ballet, tap and modern classes. She’s also trained in New York and at the Nashville School of Ballet. Evgueny Tourdiev trained at Perm Academy and Samara State Academy in Russia. Tourdiev is teacher/choreographer at University of South Carolina, and performs with dance companies and schools across the USA, where he has lived since ’01. Tourdiev has won two National Ballet Competitions, danced this role at the Playhouse in 2006, and has performed major roles in Giselle, Swan Lake, Cinderella, Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, Sleeping Beauty and other major ballets. Ms. Chadwell comments, “It’s an honor to dance with an artist of Evgueny Tourdiev’s calibre–the chance of a lifetime.” CCP’s Nutcracker, featuring nearly 100 students and faculty, is rooted in the great Russian tradition of composer Tchaikovsky and the Kirov Ballet, where the Nutcracker was born.CCP dance directors Eldar Valiev and his wife, Lilia Valieva, grew up and trained at the Kirov, and see that CCP’s Nutcracker reflects this great tradition. In addition to over 400 professional performances, CCP offers 1600 classes each year, taught by dance and theater performance professionals, in ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, modern, voice and musical theater. CCP’s Nutcracker scenery is by Virginia’s Frank Ludwig, executed in CCP’s professional shops by Tech Director John Partyka and staff. Costumes are by Tara Johnson with coordination and additions by Carol Ann Chadwell, (Aven’s mother and a CCP Board member) with support of the CCP costume staff. Nutcracker performs Thur. Dec. 4, at 7:30 pm.; Fri., Dec. 5, at 9 & 11 am; Sat., Dec. 6, at 7:30 pm.; Sun., Dec. 7 at 2:30 pm; and Mon., Dec. 8, at 9 & 11 a.m. The show’s sponsored by Hughes Real Estate Services, Playhouse Education sponsor.
