UTM Recycles! announces the next Community Recycling Event will be from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Nov. 15, and invites the public to join the grand opening of its new collection facility at the former National Guard Armory on Moody Street. Vaughn Cassidy, a representative from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, will be on hand to share information about radon, to distribute non-mercury home thermometers in exchange for mercury thermometers and to share ideas on being eco-friendly during the holidays. This event is in conjunction with Martin Beautiful’s citywide Fall Cleanup, Nov. 10-14, when the city will pick up yard debris and other trash placed at curbside. Recyclable material can be saved and brought to the new facility on Nov. 15. For more information on the citywide cleanup, contact Marvin Downing at or 587-6054. The following materials will be accepted for recycling on Nov. 15: paper and cardboard, aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastics of any kind, steel cans and other scrap metal, eye glasses, used clothing in good condition, cell phones, rechargeable batteries, ink cartridges and mercury thermometers. Rinse food and beverage containers, and it is helpful if all material is sorted beforehand. Partners and sponsors of UTM Recycles! include the American Democracy Project, the UT Martin College of Humanities and Fine Arts, the UT Martin Physical Plant, Sodexho and university student organizations including the Agronomy Club, Tri-Beta and Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society.
