The Messenger. 11.14.08 Charges were levied against a Troy driver following a one-vehicle crash early Thursday in the 200 block of West Main Street at North Second Street in Union City. Ronald Jacob Owens, 48, of 1855 Ella Grooms Road, Troy, was charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain control in the aftermath of an accident that occurred about 4:25 a.m., according to a Union City Police Department report. Police had responded to a report of an accident involving a truck’s running into a utility pole and arrived to find Owens standing beside the 1992 Dodge Dakota truck. Owens told police he’d pulled out of a parking lot across from Bottoms Up onto West Main Street and said there was something “slick” on the roadway, causing him to lose control, according to the report. Officers were unable to find anything slick on the roadway but reported the street was still damp from it having rained earlier in the day. Police also reported there were tire marks observed coming out of the parking lot where Owens said he’d just pulled from and said it “appeared that he had possibly taken off too fast and lost control of the vehicle.” Owens’ vehicle left the right side of the roadway and hit a utility pole head-on at North Second and West Main streets, according to the report. Owens was transported by police to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City, where he was treated for a fractured arm, police reported.
