The Messenger. 11.11.08 A local driver apparently escaped injury Monday when his car ran through a fence on the parking lot of Walgreens at 700 East Reelfoot Ave. in Union City. Howard Thomas Napier, 83, of 727 Nelson St., Union City, told police he was pulling into a parking space on the store lot when the next thing he knew his 1992 Mercury Sable had gone through the fence on the west side of the building, dropped to the ground and ended up facing north with its right front tire stuck against the wall, according to a Union City Police Department report. The incident ocurred about 11:20 a.m. Napier told police he did not remember but thought he may have hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal, police reported. He was wearing a seat belt and was reported to be uninjured. A witness told police that the driver accelerated through the fence and hit the ground. The witness claimed the driver was still hitting the gas when the car got stuck on the wall and she told police she thought the other driver was going to hit her while she was coming out of the Walgreens parking lot, according to the report. The store manager told police that three sections of the fence were damaged and estimated it would cost about $4,000 to repair the damage. No charges were filed.
