Top OVC newcomer
is UT Martin’s Hicks

UT Martin wide receiver Mike Hicks was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Newcomer of the Week for his effort against during Saturday’s 37-20 loss at Auburn.
Hicks caught 12 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns in the Skyhawks road loss at Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent Auburn. It marked the first time a player had 12 or more catches against the Tigers in six years (2002 season). Hicks caught a seven-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and later hauled in a nine-yard touchdown to tie the game at 20-20 in the third quarter.
Murray State’s Austen Lane earned the conference’s best defensive performer of the week award as he was credited with 3 1/2 sacks and seven total tackles during his team’s 17-10 victory over Southeast Missouri.
Lane’s Racer teammate Derrick Townsel had a 64-yard punt return to paydirt as he earned the OVC’s Specialist of the Week award.

Skyhawks tip-off
to include youths

The UT Martin men’s basketball team will tip off its regular season Friday morning at 11:30 against Maryville University of St. Louis and many area youths may be in attendance.
This week “Character Counts” week for the Tennessee Martin basketball family with the players and coaches speaking in the Obion County, Union City and Weakley County Schools all this week.
On Friday, more than 2,000 elementary, middle and high school students are expected at the game.  Admission is free for those students and lunch will be provided and a program and games will take place.
There will also be a “businessman special” where those attending Friday’s game can buy a boxed lunch for $5 or a ticket-lunch combo for $10. Lunches need to be reserved by Wednesday at 5 p.m.

UCHS hoops tickets
now on sale at school

Season tickets for the upcoming Union City High School basketball season are now on sale at the school.
The reigning Class A state champion Tornado boys and Lady Twisters have 12 home games scheduled. Price of the tickets are $40 each and includes admission to all freshman and jayvee games.
Union City opens its 2008-09 season Tuesday, Nov. 18 with a pair of Hall of Fame games against Jackson South Side. Tipoff for all Tornado home games this year will be at 6 p.m.
